7/31/2006 The Vanderbilt men’s basketball team will participate in the 2006 San Juan Shootout, Dec. 19-21 at the Mario Morales Coliseum in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The Commodores tip-off the tournament playing the host team Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at 10 a.m. CT. The Commodores’ second-round opponent will be either Northwestern or Tennessee Tech. The Wildcats and Golden Eagles meet at 12 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Dec. 19 with the second round match-up taking place on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Other first round games on Dec. 19 feature Utah against Central Florida at 2 p.m. CT and Virginia against Appalachian State at 4 p.m. CT. The tournament format includes a pair of consolation games on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. CT and 12 p.m. CT followed by the two semifinal contests at 2 p.m. CT and 4 p.m. CT. Final day action begins Thursday, Dec. 21 with the seventh place game at 10 a.m. CT and the consolation final at 12 p.m. CT. The third place contest starts at 2 p.m. CT prior to the championship game at 4 p.m. CT. “We’re excited about the opportunity to take our team to Puerto Rico and play in a tournament with such a competitive field.” Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings said. Entering its 20th year, the San Juan Shootout is the longest running Division I college basketball tournament hosted outside the continental United States. The duo averaged a combined 28.3 points last year and rank as the third leading returning scoring tandem in the Southeastern Conference entering the new campaign. The Commodores return three starters from last season’s 17-13 squad that advanced to the first round of the National Invitation Tournament. The complete 2006-07 Commodore men’s basketball schedule has not been finalized to date. |
