USA Baseball Clobbers Germany 10-3

ATHENS, Ga. ­­— The USA Baseball National Team knocked out 14 hits en route to a 10-3 win over Germany Wednesday night at Foley Field.

The National Team moved to 13-0 on the season with the two-game series sweep, while Germany fell to 0-2.

J.P. Arencibia’s (Tennessee) RBI double in the first opened the scoring for the US.

They added four more runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Darwin Barney (Oregon State) led off the frame with a single to left, stole second and scored on a RBI single by Tim Federowicz (North Carolina). Zack Cozart (Mississippi) followed with a single and both men then scored on a triple by Julio Borbon (Tennessee). Jemile Weeks (Miami) then capped the inning off with a RBI double to left to score Borbon.

Germany got on the board in the second when US starter Nick Hill (Army) hit Markus Geinger with the bases loaded.

The US got the run back in the fourth when Julio Borbon reached on a bunt hit, stole second and scored on a RBI single by Jemile Weeks.

Darwin Barney’s two-run double in the seventh pushed the lead to 8-1.

Hill (2-0) gave up one run on five hits in five innings of work with four strikeouts to pick up his second win of the summer.

Tommy Hunter (Alabama) came on in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts and two walks.

Germany plated two runs in the eighth via a double by Dominik Wulf off of Daniel Moskos (Clemson) to make it 8-3.

Todd Frazier (Rutgers) capped off the scoring for the USA with a two-run homer, his second of the summer, in the ninth inning to make it 10-3.

Darwin Barney led the US with three hits, while Julio Borbon and Jemile Weeks each chipped in with two hits on the night.

The National Team will return to Durham, N.C., tomorrow and will open a five-game series against Korea on Friday at 7 p.m. ET at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
