7/12/2006 FORT LAUDERDALE—Four Vanderbilt Commodores sit among the Top 16 bowlers heading into Day Three of the United States Junior Gold Championships, the result of an outstanding performance on Tuesday. Rising sophomores Michelle Peloquin, Kaitlyn Reynolds and Karen Grygiel and incoming freshman Josie Earnest are near the top of the 435 competitor leader board at this prestigious tournament. Peloquin, a first-team All-America and national Freshman of the Year in 2006, is in fifth place after two days and 12 games. The Enfield, Ct., product averaged an excellent 204 Tuesday to make her big move. Earnest, the nation’s No. 1 recruit in this year’s freshman class, rolled virtually the same total pinage to jump into the sixth spot and Reynolds, who last spring had a 299 game for the Commodores, vaulted into seventh place with 1,231 pins on the day. Karen Grygiel, ninth after the first day, is now in 16th place with the meet’s first major cut coming after today’s play. The top 64 bowlers will advance to Thursday. Two other Commodores, sophomore Mandy Keily (89th) and incoming freshman Ashley Belden (190) are also competing. “It is exciting to see Vanderbilt bowlers doing so well here,” says Coach John Williamson, on hand to watch the events. “The top six place winners after Friday’s action will make the USA Junior National Team and to see how many of our women are in position to potentially make this team is just terrific. Two years ago when we first began our program Vanderbilt had no profile at this event. Now we are the buzz of the tournament.” Complete results are found on bowl.com. The tournament concludes Friday. |
