Corbin and USA Baseball Complete Series Sweep

BURLINGTON, N.C. ­­— The USA Baseball National Team used a five-run second inning to run past Chinese Taipei 11-3 Wednesday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

The USA completed the seven-game series sweep of Taipei to improve to 7-0 on the summer season.

Zack Cozart’s (Ole Miss) two-run single started things off in the second, scoring Darwin Barney (Oregon State) and Todd Frazier (Rutgers) to break a 1-1 tie and give the US a 3-1 lead. Julio Borbon (Tennessee) lined a two-run double to left-center and scored on a RBI groundout by Jemile Weeks (Miami) to make it 6-1.

J.P. Arencibia’s (Tennessee) solo homer in the fifth extended the lead to 7-1.

USA starter Bryan Augenstein (Florida) (1-0) picked up the win after giving up one run in six innings off of four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Chinese Taipei took advantage of a throwing error in the seventh to plate two unearned runs and cut the lead to 7-3.

USA tallied four runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 11-3. Tim Federowicz (North Carolina) and Borbon had infield RBI singles to lead the way as the US took advantage of two Taipei errors in the frame.

Nick Hill (Army) finished out the game with three innings of relief to pick up the save. He gave up two runs, both unearned on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts

Weeks put the US on top in the first with a solo homer to left, his second of the summer.

Chinese Taipei rallied to tie the game in the second when Shen Fu Jen came through with a RBI single up the middle, his first hit in 20 at bats in the series.

Tang Chia Chun (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up six runs, four earned, in 1.1 innings in the starting effort.

The US will next head to Joplin, Mo., where they will play five games, starting on Friday against the Southwest Slashers at 7 p.m. Cal State Fullerton’s Wes Roemer is slated to take the mound.
