6/1/2006 Vanderbilt’s bowling team, which recorded the No. 1 cumulative grade point average among all Commodore varsity teams during the 2005-06 academic year, has placed six women on National Tenpin Coaches Association National Academic honor team. Recent graduate Jennifer Redmond led the Black and Gold honorees. Redmond, a civil engineering major, recently was honored as Vanderbilt’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Charlotte, N.C. native carried a 3.92 grade point for this year and has a 3.85 GPA over her college career. Jessica Tower and Tywanquila Walker, two other May graduates, also were cited for outstanding academics. Tower, from Denver, Colo., posted a 3.67 grade point this year in English and Human and Organizational Development. Walker, from Clarksdale, Miss., had a 3.82 in psychology and Spanish. Juniors Christine Luce and Mallory Abbott also made the squad. Luce, of San Antonio, recorded a 3.86 in Child Studies while Abbott earned a 3.53 this year in Human and Organizational Development. First-team All-America and national “Rookie of the Year” Michelle Peloquin had an impressive 3.60 grade point in her freshman year, majoring in the pre-medicine curriculum of Chemistry/Biology. A year ago in their first season of existence, the Commodore bowlers had four National Academic honorees including repeat winners Redmond, Tower, and Luce. “We take tremendous pride in our academic achievements,” says Coach John Williamson. “Our goals include excellence on the lanes and in the classroom so these six women have not only succeeded on an individual level, they have set a standard of excellence for future Commodore teams to follow.” |
