Commodores To Play In NCAA Atlanta Regional 5/29/2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For the second time in three seasons, Vanderbilt will play in the NCAA postseason, this time against Michigan in the opening round of the Atlanta Regional on Friday. Vanderbilt (36-25) is the No. 2 seed and will face a Michigan (42-19) team that won the Big 10 regular season and tournament championships on Friday at 2 p.m. CT. Georgia Tech (45-16) is the No. 1 seed and host institution. They will face No. 4 seed Stetson (38-22) on Friday night at 6 p.m. CT. The Commodores are making their fifth NCAA appearance overall and second in four seasons under head coach Tim Corbin. They are 6-8 all-time in NCAA postseason play. “I knew once the kids got here, and once we met in the locker room this morning, we’d be able to re-group and re-focus again,” said Corbin. “It’s almost like Christmas morning where you know there’s a surprise; you just don’t know what it is. For the kids, it’s an exciting time, and there’s a sense of accomplishment to get to that point. Now, there’s more baseball to be played, and possibly–if we play well enough–three more tournaments.” VU has never played any of the other three teams in the postseason. They have played Michigan and Georgia Tech previously, but have never faced Stetson. The winner of this regional will face off with the winner of the Lexington Regional, hosted by SEC co-champion Kentucky, next weekend in a three-game Super Regional. The regional continues Saturday with games slated for noon (losers’ bracket) and 4 p.m. (winner’s bracket). Sunday’s games are at noon and 4 p.m., the latter the first possible championship game.
