Buschmann, Flaherty Earn SEC Honors

Nashville, Tenn. – Senior pitcher Matt Buschmann was named to the Southeastern Conference Baseball Good Works Team and shortstop Ryan Flaherty was named Freshman of the Week the conference office announced today.

The SEC sponsors a Good Works Teams for all 20 sports it sponsors. The Baseball Good Works Team represents 12 SEC athletes, one from each competing institution. The Good Works Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.

Buschmann, a senior from St. Louis, Mo., helped organize the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Christmas Party for underprivileged children all four years of his collegiate career. He bought and wrapped presents for the baseball team’s 2005 party for underprivileged youth and has made annual Halloween visits to the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital with the team as well. Buschmann represented the baseball team as a SAAC member for the 2005-06 season. In addition, several times during his Vanderbilt career, he participated in the Kidz Zone (children’s activity area) during the football games.

Flaherty went 8-for-16 with a double, four runs and four RBI in four games last week. He was 6-for-10 with four RBI and three runs scored in the two wins against South Carolina and he finished the regular season as the team’s leading hitter at .358.

The Commodores will open SEC Tournament play this Wednesday against No. 3 seed Georgia at 1 p.m. at the Hoover Met in Hoover, Ala.
