Vanderbilt closes out the regular season this weekend as South Carolina comes to town for a three-game series. The series begins Thursday at 6 p.m. and will continue on Friday at 6 p.m., before closing out on Saturday at 1 p.m. Friday’s game will be televised regionally on Comcast Sports Southeast with Joe Fisher (play-by-play) and Willy Daunic (color) calling the action. Saturday is Senior Day and the baseball program will recognize three seniors (Matt Buschmann, Brian Hernandez and Rucker Taylor) in pregame ceremonies. South Carolina is 35-18 on the year and 14-13 in the SEC after dropping two of three to Tennessee last weekend in Columbia. The Gamecocks were ranked No. 1 at one point this season and had a 26-3 overall record and 8-1 league mark on April 2 after sweeping LSU in Baton Rouge. Since that time they have gone 9-15 overall and 5-12 in league play. Vanderbilt has reached the 30 win mark for the third straight season under head coach Tim Corbin, marking the first time that has been done since Larry Schmittou’s Commodores did it five years in a row (1971-75). The Commodores hit .359 in the four games last week with eight homers and 38 runs scored and are now hitting a season high .303 as a team, while the pitching staff allowed 23 runs and had a 5.91 ERA. Senior catcher Brian Hernandez went 8-for-16 on the week with two homers, two doubles, nine RBI and six runs scored. Ryan Davis was 7-for-20 (.350) on the week with a homer, double and seven RBI. He had a career day with five hits in the win on Saturday over LSU and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Catcher Shea Robin had a hit in all four games this week to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. He went 8-for-18 with two doubles, a homer, five RBI and four runs scored. Tickets are still available for games Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Call (615) 322-GOLD and select option 1 to order. |
