Women’s Tennis to Face Baylor in Sweet Sixteen 5/16/2006 STANFORD, Calif. — On Thursday, May 18 the No. 12 Commodores will take on No. 5 Baylor in Stanford, California at the NCAA Round of 16. Baylor held its first and second round opponents scoreless, defeating both Texas Southern and Texas A&M 4-0. Vanderbilt battled and defeated A-Sun Conference champions ETSU last Friday (4-0), and followed with a close contest with fellow SEC member Georgia (4-2) in the first two rounds of the Championships. When the Commodores and the Bears met earlier in the season, Vanderbilt upset the No. 10 Bears (4-3) indoors at the Currey Tennis Center. The Commodores took the doubles point with wins from Maggie Yahner/Amanda Taylor and freshman pair Liberty Sveke/Courtney Ulery. In the singles contest, Taka Bertrand, Taylor, and Caroline Ferrell notched the three wins that would give the Commodores the edge in the contest. Match time is set for 3 p.m. pacific time, and live scoring is available on the Stanford Athletics website. In addition to Vanderbilt, Florida and Kentucky are the only remaining SEC competitors in the women’s NCAA Round of 16. On Thursday at 3 p.m. (pacific) Florida will face UCLA and Kentucky will battle No. 2 Notre Dame at Stanford. |
