5/13/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt Commodores defeated Georgia 4-3 in Round 2 of the NCAA Championships and will advance to the Sweet Sixteen in Stanford, California. The ‘Dogs and the ‘Dores stayed close throughout the doubles contest. VU’s Amanda Fish and Taka Bertrand were the first to finish, defeating UGA’s Natalie Frazier and Caroline Basu 8-4. Darya Ivanov and Evgenia Subbotina The point was determined by No. 3 doubles, where early in the match UGA’s Sara Lett and Kelley Hyndman looked like they were going to take a quick victory against VU’s Liberty Sveke and Courtney Ulery, with a 7-3 lead. But the Ulery was unable to follow up with a singles victory, and was defeated by UGA’s Kelley Hyndman at No. 4 in a straight set loss (6-3, 6-0), tying the contest at 1-1. Taka Bertrand and Maggie Yahner followed with wins against UGA opponents for the second time this season. Yahner was the first to get the Commodores on the board in the singles round, defeating Sara Lett 6-2, 6-3. Bertrand followed with a straight set win over Evgenia Subbotina 6-1, 6-1 to put the ‘Dores up 3-1. Vanderbilt’s Caroline Ferrell and Amanda Taylor struggled in their contests at No. 5 and No. 3. After a 6-2 first set loss, Ferrell stayed close to UGA’s Darya Ivanov, but couldn’t match the Bulldog, and fell 6-2, 7-5. Taylor took The clincher came down to No. 1 singles, with Georgia’s Natalie Frazier and Vanderbilt’s Amanda Fish. When the two met during regular season play, the No. 1 victory came down to a third set tiebreaker, where Fish narrowly edged out the UGA competitor (4-6, 6-0, 7-6(2)). In Saturday’s contest, the two had another tight match, but Fish was able to pull out a straight set win, 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the victory for the Commodores. The ‘Dores will face the winner of the Baylor/Texas A&M contest at the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in Stanford, California on May 18. RESULTS Singles |
