5/12/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt Commodores defeated ETSU in the first round of the NCAA tournament (4-0), and will face Georgia on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Commodores charged into the doubles round and quickly took the point in the top two spots. Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish defeated ETSU’s Slywia Ziolkowska and Masha Ilina at No.1 (8-2), and Caroline Ferrell and Amanda Amanda Taylor was the first to notch a singles win, holding Volobueva to two games to take the match win 6-1, 6-1. Within a few minutes of Taylor’s victory, freshman Maggie Yahner followed up with the second Commodore win, defeating Ziolkowska 6-2, 6-3. ETSU’s No. 1 singles competitor Masha Ilina went up 3-0 against Amanda Fish before the Vanderbilt junior got on the board in the first set. Fish quickly rebounded to take the lead and won the first set 7-5. Vanderbilt’s SEC Player of the Year Taka Bertrand sealed the Commodore win with her 6-2, 6-4 victory over Olya Batsula. The ‘Dores will take on Georgia on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville for the second round of NCAA action. The No. 24 Bulldogs defeated Indiana 4-1 earlier on Friday.
