5/11/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 12 Commodores (21-4, 11-2) will kick-off their 2006 NCAA Championship campaign with first round action against East Tennessee State University on Friday, May 12 at 1 p.m. in Nashville. The ETSU Lady Bucks wrapped up their inaugural regular season in the Atlantic Sun Conference, where they took the A-Sun tournament title. This year will be ETSU’s first-ever NCAA invitation. The squad is led by junior Masha Ilina, a Kyiv, Ukraine native. Ilina went undefeated at No. 1 in conference play (8-0) during the regular season. The Commodores will have had nearly three weeks off dual match competition since the SEC tournament in Gainesville. After defeating LSU in the second round of the tourney, the ‘Dores fell in the semifinals to third-seeded Kentucky (4-2). This is only the third time in seven years that an SEC opponent will be joining Vanderbilt in the regional, No. 25 Georgia. In 2002 the ‘Dores defeated Auburn in the second round 4-0, and in 1999 the ‘Dores defeated Kentucky 5-0 in Nashville. The Commodores have hosted the first and second rounds consecutively since 1999, and have advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen all seven years. Georgia and Indiana University will begin match play at 10 a.m., followed by the Commodores and the Lady Bucks at 1 p.m. The second round will be played at noon. All matches are free and open to the public and will take place at the Currey Tennis Center.
