5/4/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 12 Commodores will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championship May 12-14, marking the team’s eighth season to host during Head Coach Geoff Macdonald’s tenure. The 12th seeded ‘Dores (21-4) will take on East Tennessee State University (23-4), while Indiana will battle Georgia at the Currey Tennis Center courts. The first and second rounds of the NCAA Women’s Championships are currently scheduled for Friday, May 12 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Saturday, May 13 at noon at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville. Georgia and Indiana University will battle first on Friday, followed by the Commodores and East Tennessee State University at 1 p.m. In 2005, the Commodores defeated IUPUI and Florida State in Nashville, earning a 15-1 mark overall in hosting the NCAA first and second rounds. The final rounds at Stanford University will be the first National Tennis Championship in NCAA history with men’s and women’s teams competing simultaneously at the same site. Complete 2006 NCAA Bracket: Tennis NCAA Update Commodores Amanda Fish, Taka Bertrand, and Ryan Preston will compete in the NCAA Singles Championships May 23-28 in Stanford, California. Fish has led the No. 12 ‘Dores at No. 1 and ended the season with a 20-5 record, earning a spot on the All-SEC First Team. Bertrand backed Fish at No. 2, only dropping one singles contest during the season (22-1). The sophomore took home the SEC Player of the Year Award for her 2006 performance. In 2005, Bertrand and Fish fell in the first round of the singles tournament to opponents from Clemson and Georgia Tech. Ryan Preston will make his NCAA singles debut representing the men’s team at the tournament in California. The team captain led the Commodores at No. 1, going 13-8 overall (6-6 in the SEC) and notching All-SEC First Team honors. |
