Freitag Named USA Coach for Japan Event 5/4/2006
Freitag Named USA Women’s Golf Coach For Event Versus Japan Vanderbilt women’s golf coach Martha Richards Freitag will serve as women’s head coach of Team USA in the 2006 Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship, the Golf Coaches Association of America recently announced. The 31st annual event will take place July 13-15 at Sun Hills Club in Tochigi, Japan. “It is a huge honor,” Freitag said. “Events like these are one of the few ways to represent your country since golf is not an Olympic sport. Being a part of this is really dear to my heart.” Freitag’s squad will feature the top four female collegiate players in the nation, joined by an eight-member American men’s team coached by Robert Linville of Division-III power Greensboro College. The combined group will take on Japan in a variety of medal-stroke play competitions. Since arriving at Vanderbilt in 2000, Freitag has guided all six of her squads to the NCAA Championship. The 2004 Commodores won the Southeastern Conference Championship and finished fifth nationally. A two-time SEC Coach of Year honoree, Freitag has tutored three All-Americans at Vanderbilt, including Sarah Jacobs, Courtney Wood and May Wood. The 2006 Vanderbilt women’s team recently earned selection to the NCAA East Regional taking place May 11-13 in Bryan Park, N.C. |
