Women’s Golf Sent to NCAA East Regional

5/1/2006

The 14th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s golf team will compete in the 2006 NCAA East Regional at the Bryan Park Golf Course in Bryan Park, N.C., May 11-13, the NCAA announced Monday. The regional will be hosted by Wake Forest University.

It marks the sixth consecutive trip to an NCAA regional for the Commodores, who are seeded sixth.

Vanderbilt is one of 63 schools named to compete in three regional competitions. A total of 324 participants have been selected to the regionals. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championship finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each region.

The championship finals will be held May 23-26 at the Scarlet Course on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

“We’re excited to be going back to an NCAA regional,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “It’s a golf course that we know and it sets up well for us since we’re a strong ball-striking squad. Each of the regionals are full of very strong teams and we’re going to have to play really well to advance to the finals.”

Earlier this season, Vanderbilt finished 10th at the Bryan National Collegiate at Bryan Park Golf Course, carding one of the tournament’s best team rounds (289) on the final day. The Commodores enter the NCAA regional coming off a fourth place finish at the SEC Championship, April 14-16 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin.

Vanderbilt is led by a pair of highly ranked players in freshman Jacqui Concolino (12th) and junior Chris Brady (28th). Concolino has claimed medalist honors in two tournaments this spring while Brady has posted three Top 10 finishes.

Vanderbilt is one of 10 Southeastern Conference schools to be selected to a regional — more than any other conference in the nation.
