4/20/2006

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Commodores cleaned up at the SEC awards on Wednesday, with five of their seven players earning a spot on the All-SEC teams and Taka Bertrand taking Vanderbilt’s first ever SEC Player of the Year Award.

Vanderbilt’s top five singles players all earned honors, with junior Amanda Fish (18-5, 9-2), and sophomores Taka Bertrand (21-1, 11-0) and Amanda Taylor (19-4, 9-2) taking a place on the SEC’s First Team. Sophomore Caroline Ferrell (14-7, 8-3) and freshman Courtney Ulery (16-6, 8-3) took a spot on the Second Team.

Taka Bertrand took the conference’s most prestigious SEC honor, The Player of the Year award, marking the first time in Vanderbilt history that a Commodore walked away with the honor.

The former SEC Freshman of the Year was the highest seeded singles player to go undefeated in the SEC. Bertrand only surrendered one match out of her 22 contests during regular season play and upset several ranked opponents, including third ranked Diana Srebrovic of Florida.

The Commodores will begin SEC tournament play on Friday at 2 p.m. (ET) in Gainesville, going head to head with the winner of the Arkansas/LSU contest.
