4/8/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 63 Commodores (7-11, 2-7) fell to the No. 12 Florida Gators (12-6, 6-3) at the Currey Tennis Center on Friday (6-1). After splits at the first two doubles prosets, VU’s Jordan Magarik and Ryan Preston battled Florida’s Chris Brandi and Greg Ouellette at No. 2 for the doubles point. Each player had a powerful serve, which kept the set tied, with Florida leading off. The Commodores broke the Gators at 7-7 to inch ahead 8-7 and clinch the point on the serve at 9-7. “I thought we played terrific in doubles. I think Nos. 2 and 3 played the best doubles I’ve seen all year,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. The ‘Dores were unable to follow through with three wins in singles, and went down in straight set losses at Nos. 1-6. Nik Cromydas and Jordan Magarik were able to stay within a few games of their opponents, but Florida’s playing experience proved to be the edge the Gators needed to overcome the ‘Dores. “I thought that if we could attack the singles and get Florida on their heels we might have a chance. In a match like this, with a team with that is so much higher ranked then us, we have to make them think it’s a dog fight and we couldn’t do that. They definitely out-played us in some of the matches,” Duvenhage said. The Commodores will look to rebound in their final SEC home contest of the season against South Carolina on Sunday at 12 p.m. RESULTS Doubles |
