DAVID PRICE STRIKES OUT CAREER HIGH 17 IN 7-1 WIN OVER ARKANSAS Commodores score seven runs in the first two innings to improve to 8-2 in SEC. NASHVILLE — Sophomore southpaw David Price struck out a career high 17 batters to lead Vanderbilt to a 7-1 win over No. 12 Arkansas Friday night at Hawkins Field. Price gave up one run on three hits in eight innings of work and walked four to improve to 5-2 on the year. He is 4-0 in Southeastern Conference action with a miniscule 0.56 ERA. He bested his previous strikeout mark of 15 set in seven innings against Brown earlier this year. The Murfreesboro product has now recorded double digit strikeout marks in his last six starts. The Commodores won their third straight and improved to 21-9 on the year and 8-2 in league play, while the Razorbacks fell to 23-8 overall and 4-6 in conference. Vanderbilt snapped a three-game losing streak to Arkansas and has won its last 10 games at home. Pedro Alvarez continued his homer barrage, with a two-run shot in the first inning to stake the Commodores to a 2-0 lead. It was his fourth round-tripper in his last four games. He finished the night 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored and he is now hitting .512 in SEC games. VU added three more runs in the first to take a 5-0 lead. Ryan Davis and Parker Hanks had RBI singles in the frame. Jake Dugger hit a solo homer in the second to make it 5-1. The Commodores took advantage of six Arkansas errors in the contest and scored two more runs in the second to put the game away. Brian Hernandez and Ryan Davis had two hits each in the winning effort. The Commodores and Razorbacks will play the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. It will be a battle of southpaws as Cody Crowell will start for Vanderbilt, while Nick Schmidt will take the hill for Arkansas.
