Men’s Tennis Host Florida & South Carolina

4/7/2006

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 63 Commodores will look to improve their SEC record this weekend when they host their final home contests with No. 12 Florida and No. 56 South Carolina this weekend.

The Commodores (7-10, 2-6) dropped a tough non-conference match on Wednesday to local rival Middle Tennessee (6-1). Nik Cromydas pulled off the only ‘Dore win, against MT’s former Sun Belt Player of the Week Morgan Richard. After splitting sets, Cromydas took the win in a third set tiebreaker.

VU’s No. 48 Ryan Preston leads the Commodores in singles wins, going 11-6 overall and 4-4 in the SEC at No. 1. Preston currently has conference victories over Alabama’s Joseph Jung (7-5, 6-3), Mississippi State’s Pierre Mouillon (4-6, 7-6(6), 6-3)), Tennessee’s No. 99 Bobby Cameron (6-3, 5-7, 6-
4) and LSU’s No. 16 Erling Trait (6-1, 7-5).

Andy Mack follows Preston in SEC winnings, going 3-5 in the conference and 9-8 at No. 3.

The ‘Dores will host No. 12 Florida (11-6, 5-3) on Friday, VU Head Coach’s Ian Duvenhage’s coaching home from 1989-2001. The Gators have an all time 30-8 advantage over Vanderbilt and ended the Commodore season last year in round 2 of the NCAA tournament.

“Ultimately, what every coach wants is to feel like their team is playing up their potential. We didn’t do this against MTSU,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. “I know this weekend I’ll be able to live with any results as long as we play up to our potential. I also know that if we play this way we definitely have a shot.”

On Sunday, the ‘Dores will host the Gamecocks (11-11, 3-5) at noon. USC had an SEC sweep last weekend, downing Auburn (4-3) and Alabama (4-3).

VU’s marketing department will be grilling hotdogs at Friday’s contest, free for fans in attendance (while supplies last). Match time is 2:30.
