Commodores Fifth After Day One In Carolina 4/7/2006
CARY, N.C. — With five of their 10 rounds at par or better, the Vanderbilt men’s golf team ended the first day of the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate in fifth place. Two rounds were completed Friday, with a third and final round scheduled for Saturday on the 6,787 yard, par-72 Willard Byrd layout of the MacGregor Downs Country Club. Freshman Jon Curran led the Commodores at four-under-par for the day. He stood at even par for his first 27 holes before carding four birdies in his last nine holes of the afternoon. The Hopkinton, Mass., product stands in a tie for fifth place with Kent State’s Peter Ahn. Junior Luke List also scored below par for the Commodores. List shot the low first round for the Commodores at three-under-par. The Ringgold, Ga., native put together two eagles and a birdie on three straight holes, closing his first round on 17 (eagle) and 18 (birdie) before opening the second round with an eagle on the 10th. At one-under for the tournament, List stands in a three-way tie for 13th place. Sophomore Brett Lange shot a one-under-par 71 in the second round, improving his position into an eight-way tie for 25th place at one-over for the tournament. Lange’s classmate, John Ebert, shot even par through the first round before struggling with three double bogeys on his second 18. Junior Dos Goldsmith shot two rounds of three-over-par, scoring for the Commodores in the second round but not the first. As a team, the Commodores stand eight strokes behind North Carolina and Kentucky. After the Wildcats shot the day’s low first round, the Tar Heels turned in the day’s low second round, and the two teams are tied at nine-under-par ahead of the 14-team field. Duke and Houston round of the top four in front of the Commodores. At one-under for the tournament, Vanderbilt holds a one-stroke lead over Kent State and Tulsa. Individually, Colorado’s Edward McGlasson leads the 78-person field at 10-under. Duke’s Ryan Blaum and North Carolina’s Ted Smith stand in second and third, respecitively, with Smith only two strokes behind the leader. Saturday’s third round is scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. ET. The Commodores will begin on the first tee at 8:15 a.m. Complete results for the tournament are available at: |
