4/5/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Commodores (7-10, 2-6) surrendered their first match in eight contests to the Blue Raiders (12-6) on Wednesday at the Currey Tennis Center. In doubles, No. 40 Andy Mack and Evan Dufaux were unable to overcome the Raider’s national top 5 team of Andreas Siljestrom and Marco Born. The German and Sweden natives were each a staggering 6-foot-9-inches, and quickly downed the ‘Dores 8-2. The Commodores kept within one game of the Blue Raiders during the clinching match at No. 3 doubles, but the MT pulled ahead on a service break to take the win 8-5. The Commodores followed with a doubles win at No. 2, with Jordan Magarik and Ryan Preston downing Kai Schledorn and Brandon Allan in a shortened proset 7-6. VU’s single doubles win wasn’t enough to shift the team’s momentum, and the Commodores dropped five of six singles contests. “It wasn’t what I had in mind, I didn’t think we played well,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. “I really felt like we’d been building something in the last three matches but unfortunately this was a step back. We will definitely have to regroup before Friday.” Despite the losses, the ‘Dores took the Blue Raiders to the three tiebreakers, the first set at No. 6, the second set of No. 2 and the final sets of Nos. 3 and 5. Nik Cromydas pulled off the only ‘Dore win, against MT’s former Sun Belt Player of the Week Morgan Richard. After splitting sets, Cromydas took the win a third set tiebreaker. Andy Mack was the other ‘Dore to play a third set and fell in a super tiebreaker (6). The Commodores will host Florida on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Currey Tennis Center. VU’s marketing department will be grilling hotdogs for the first fans in attendance. RESULTS |
