Vanderbilt To Play Temple in Football 4/4/2006 Vanderbilt To Play Temple in Football Next Year; Nashville, Tenn. — Working in conjunction with officials from the Southeastern Conference and Mid-American Conference, Vanderbilt has agreed to play the Temple Owls in football this season. The Vanderbilt-Temple game is scheduled Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 in Vanderbilt Stadium. Prior to today’s announcement, the Commodores were to face Kent State on that date. The Vanderbilt-Kent State encounter will move to Oct. 27, 2007, the date originally set for the Vanderbilt-Temple game. The date switch was accepted by Vanderbilt after officials from both the MAC and SEC approached the school, Commodore Director of Sport Operations Brian Reese said. Reese oversees the operation of Vanderbilt’s football program. “This decision is intended to benefit the MAC and its members,” Reese said. “As the newest member of the MAC, Temple and the conference were having difficulty completing their composite schedule for next year. Since Temple and Kent State are our common opponents, and therefore it’s not about losing a date, we tried to be as helpful as you could to all parties.” The Commodores will continue to host six home games during the 2006 season following the action. After opening the season with road games at Michigan and Alabama, the Commodores will play consecutive home games against Arkansas on Sept. 16, Tennessee State on Sept. 23, and Temple, Sept. 30. In the second half of the season, the Commodores will also host Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks on Oct. 21, the Florida Gators on Nov. 4, and the Tennessee Volunteers on Nov. 18. Vanderbilt and Temple have met once previously, though the encounter came before World War II. In 1935, one year after the retirement of legendary Vanderbilt head coach Dan McGugin, Temple defeated the Commodores 6-3 on a Friday night in Philadelphia.
