‘Dore Golfers Struggle in Carolina 3/31/2006
Browns Summit, N.C. — Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team struggled during its opening holes during the opening round of the ninth annual Bryan National Collegiate Friday, finishing the day in 15th place. Purdue leads the team standings with a seven-over par 295. Duke is three shots back in second place. Vanderbilt shot 316 on the day. The Blue Devils’ Elizabeth Janangelo fired a five-under 67, two better than Nannette Hill of Wake Forest for the individual lead. It was a day when no Commodore could consistently find the right touch. Sophomore Liebelei Lawrence, in her first action since being sidelined with an ankle sprain, shot 78 to lead the Commodore team along with Chris Brady. Lawrence began slow with two bogeys and a double-bogey over her first four holes and then played the next 14 two-over. Brady also finished better than she began, playing her final 10 holes one-over par. Freshman Jacqui Concolino started in trouble with a double-bogey six and was six over-par after just five holes before settling down to play the next 13 holes one-over par. She finished with a 79. Amber Lundskog shot 81 to complete Vanderbilt scoring. Kristen Svicarovich was forced to withdraw due to illness. Her status for playing tomorrow is uncertain. “This is a difficult golf course with tough hole locations today,” said Coach Martha Richards Freitag. “I feel as though par today was more like 74. We just got off to a bad start in windy conditions. Liebelei hit the ball quite well and I was pleased with her play.” The 54-hole event is played at Bryan Park Champions Course, just outside Greensboro, N.C. The Champions Course is par 72 and yardage is 6,210 yards. This year’s field consists of 10 teams ranked in Golf Week’s top 20 including top-ranked Duke. Also competing are No. 6 Georgia, No. 8 Purdue, No. 11 Wake Forest, No. 12 California, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 14 Vanderbilt, No. 16 Florida, No. 17 Virginia, No. 20 Oklahoma State, North Carolina, LSU, South Carolina, NC State, Furman, UNC Wilmington, College of Charleston and UNC Greensboro.
