Commodores Take Third SEC Sweep, VU 7 MSU 0

STARKVILLE, Tenn.- The Commodores (15-2, 6-0) notched their third SEC sweep when they downed Mississippi State (3-10, 1-5) 7-0 in Starkville.

After sweeping the doubles point, the Commodores followed up with quick singles wins from Amanda Fish and Taka Bertrand at the top positions.

“Taka and Amanda just took care of business,” VU Assistant Coach Meike Babel said. “Amanda has been working so hard during practice, it’s really starting to show in her playing. And Taka is just Miss. Reliable as always.”

Freshman Maggie Yahner saw her first singles action since March 5 against Auburn. Yahner easily overwhelmed MSU freshman Elna de Villiers at No. 6 (6-2, 6-1).

Courtney Ulery continued her undefeated SEC streak when she downed Polina Kokoulina at No. 4 (7-5, 6-1). Fellow freshman Liberty Sveke followed with a sound defeat against Daniela Juskova (6-3, 6-1).

The closest match of the afternoon came at No. 3 with VU’s Amanda Taylor and MSU’s Renee Joseph. After dropping the first set (3-6), Taylor rebounded to defeat Joseph in a tiebreaker 7-6(5), followed by a super tiebreaker win (13-11).

The No.12 Commodores will take a break in SEC action to host No. 2 Notre Dame on Wednesday at the Currey Tennis Center.
