Bowlers Advance At Brunswick

3/26/2006

WAUKEGAN, IL–Vanderbilt’s bowling team won three of four NCAA games Saturday and then advanced in the double-elimination portion of the Brunswick Zone Fountain Square.

The Commodores finished the lengthy seeding portion of the tournament in fourth place against many of the nation’s top teams.  They then began the double-elimination tourney with a Baker Game loss to New Jersey City before bouncing back to topple Delaware State.  They face Farleigh Dickinson tomorrow in the loser’s bracket.

Vanderbilt began the day with four team games, losing to Farleigh Dickinson before coming back to beat Delaware State, Minnesota State and fourth rated New Jersey City.

The New Jersey City victory, 1110-942, was one of the team’s top efforts of the year and included a sparkling performance from Tara Kane.  The Greensburg, Pa., freshman began with three strikes before leaving a single pin open in the fourth.  She then closed with seven strikes and left an 8-pin count on her last ball.  It was two pins shy of her season’s high game.

“This tournament is similar to the NCAA Championship format,” Coach John Williamson says. “You spend time qualifying for a seed and then you go into double-elimination with Baker Games.  Baker Games are anyone’s game; the team that gets on a roll and develops chemistry will win a Baker Game and that is why you see some unpredictable outcomes.”
