Preston Upsets UM’s No. 16 Tveit, kills 9 match streak

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Commodores dropped their first match of the weekend to No. 13 Ole Miss (13-2, 4-1) 6-1 at the Currey Tennis Center on Friday.

The team’s only win of the afternoon came from No. 68 sophomore Ryan Preston who defeated No. 16 Erling Tveit at No. 1 in a straight set victory (6-1, 7-5). Preston ended Tveit’s nine match winning streak with the win.

The Commodores (5-8, 0-5) played a strong doubles round, refusing to let the Top 15 foe take a win by more than three games. Ryan Preston and Nathan Sachs were narrowly defeated by UM’s Bram ten Berge and Juan Pablo Di Cesare 8-6.

In singles play, the Commodores were unable to keep the pressure on the Rebels that they had through out doubles.

Junior Andy Mack made a comeback in his second set after falling 6-2 against Bram ten Berge in the first. Mack and ten Berge exchanged points throughout the contest, but Bram edged ahead to close out the win 6-2, 6-4.

The Commodores will look to continue improvements against Mississippi State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
