3/23/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Commodores will serve it up southern style as they host Dixie conference foes No. 13 Ole Miss and No. 55 Mississippi State this weekend at the Currey Tennis Center. At their last SEC outing, the Commodores (5-6, 0-4) were narrowly defeated by LSU (4-3). After dropping the doubles point, VU’s Jordan Magarik tied the singles contest at 3-3 against the Tigers, following wins by Evan Dufaux at No. 2 and Nik Cromydas at No. 5. The clinching match came at No. 1 singles, where Ryan Preston battled SEC Indoors Champion Ken Skupski. Preston breezed through the first set (6- 3), but was unable to keep up the momentum and fell 7-6(5), 6-4 in the final set. “We’re going to try and build on the LSU match, which was the best match we’ve played all year. We’re just focusing on continuing improvement,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. The Rebels (12-2) are currently 3-1 in conference play, with one loss against Florida. Sophomore No. 16 Erling Tveit is in the midst of a 9-match winning streak in singles play. Tveit also leads the team in doubles with partner Eric Claesson, notching 8 consecutive wins. Ole Miss head coach Billy Chadwick earned his 500th career win on Wednesday, when the Rebels downed Memphis in Oxford. This week, Mississippi State (4-6, 1-3) boasts the SEC’s Player of the Week, Pierre Mouillon. The sophomore out of Le Perreux, France recently clinched the win for the Bulldogs against Oregon at No. 2 singles. The Ole Miss contest will begin at 2 p.m., and hot dogs will be served to the first fans in attendance (weather permitting). The ‘Dores will host MSU on Sunday at 1 p.m. |
