NASHVILLE — Five Vanderbilt pitchers combined to throw a three-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over Belmont Wednesday afternoon at Hawkins Field. Ty Davis (5-2) pitched three innings of one-hit baseball in the winning effort and he was followed by Cameron Betourne who threw two innings of two-hit relief. Tyler Rhoden, Josh Zeid and Brett Jacobson then closed out the game with four innings of hitless work. “Pitching and defense was the key today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. “The pitchers threw strikes and I thought Pedro (Alvarez) and Ryan (Flaherty) made some nice plays at the corner infield spots.” The Commodores won their eighth game in nine tries and improved to 14-7 on the year while the Bruins fell to 10-11. Vanderbilt put together a four-run third inning with Shea Robin and David Macias recording RBI singles to lead the way. Brian Hernandez had a RBI and Ryan Flaherty a sacrifice fly RBI to account for the other runs. Robin recorded his second RBI single of the game in the fourth and Dominic de la Osa hit a two-run double in the fifth to close out the scoring in the contest. Robin and Alex Feinberg led the Commodores with two hits each, while Matt Reynolds, Ben Petsch and Carlo Testa each had a hit to lead the Bruins. The Commodores will host SEC foe Auburn this weekend in a three-game series starting on Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday’s contest will start at 2 p.m. and will be televised on College Sports Southeast.
