Curran Posts Top 20 Finish In Texas

HUMBLE, Texas — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished 16th at the three-day Hall of Fame Invitational on the Tournament Course at Redstone Golf Club. Freshman Jon Curran posted a Top 20 finish, ending the tournament in a tie for 17th place at nine over.

Freshman Tyler Matthews came in at 14 over, placing in a tie for 41st place. Also scoring for the Commodores on Sunday were juniors Luke List and Dos Goldsmith who ended tournament at 24-over and 26-over, respectively.

Oklahoma State shot a three-round total 16-over-par 880 to win. Anthony Kim of Oklahoma posted a three-round total of eight-under 208, closing with even-par 72 to claim the individual title by eight shots. He was the only golfer to break par for the weekend.

The Cowboys won the team championship by 10 strokes – a tournament-record margin of victory – over Texas A&M. Four Oklahoma State golfers finished in the top 10. Jonathan Moore finished second at even par, Pablo Martin was two-over to finish fourth while Chris Clarke – who was competing as an individual – and Trent Leon finished tied for eighth at six-over.

Texas A&M fired the low round of the tournament – one-over 289 to vault up three spots to second with a three-round 26-over 890. Two other Big 12 schools – Oklahoma and Texas – tied for third at 35-over. East Tennessee State (+37) slid to fifth. Arizona and Purdue tied for sixth at 40-over while Georgia and TCU tied for eighth at +44. Clemson (+45) came finished 10th and was followed by South Carolina-Aiken (+46) and New Mexico (+59). Arkansas and Duke tied at 65-over with Wake Forest (+66), Vanderbilt (+70) and Guilford (+82) completing the standings.

Kim’s eight-stroke victory was the most in the three-year history of the event. Moore was followed by Texas A&M’s Robert Gates (+1) – who posted the low score of the day with 67, Martin and Jhonatton Vegas of Texas (+3). There was a tie at sixth between East Tennessee State’s Rhys Davies and Bronson Burgoon of Texas A&M at four-over. Jon McLean of TCU tied with Clarke and Leon for eighth.

Vanderbilt continues the 2006 season on Sunday, March 26, in Awendaw, S.C., competing in the Hootie at Bull’s Bay.
