Pedro Alvarez

Commodores host in-town foe Belmont tomorrow night at 6 p.m.

Nashville, Tenn.

Freshman third baseman Pedro Alvarez was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for his offensive performance in five games last week.

The Commodores went 4-1 with a series win over Ole Miss in the conference opener in Oxford over the weekend. They have won seven of their last eight games and are 13-7 overall and tied for first in the SEC East with a 2-1 mark.

Alvarez went 7-for-18 (.389) on the week with two homers, two doubles and five RBI. He was 5-for-12 (.417) with two doubles, a homer and two RBI against Ole Miss. His two-run homer sparked the Commodores to a 5-0 win in the series clincher Saturday afternoon. Alvarez walked five times on the week and now has a SEC leading 24 walks in 19 games this year.

He is the second Commodore player to win a conference weekly honor this season. David Price received the Pitcher of the Week award last week, while sophomore Cody Crowell was up for the honor this week for his two-hit shutout over Ole Miss last Saturday.

VU will be at home for four games this week, starting with a game against in-town foe Belmont tomorrow night at 6 p.m.

The Bruins are 10-10 on the year after dropping two of three to Lipscomb over the weekend.

Vanderbilt leads the all-time series 37-9 and have won four of the last five matchups dating back to 2001.
