Vandy Women’s Basketball NCAA Preview 3/17/2006 Vanderbilt Opens 19th NCAA Appearance Against Louisville Saturday NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team, playing host to the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend, will take on Louisville Saturday at approximately 9:30 p.m. CT in Memorial Gymnasium. The game between the eighth-seeded Commodores and ninth-seeded Cardinals will tip-off 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game of session two — first-seeded North Carolina against 16th-seeded UC Riverside. Those four teams are vying for a spot in the Sweet 16’s Cleveland Regional. Also featured at Memorial Gym are LSU, Florida Atlantic, Minnesota and Washington from the San Antonio Region. The Golden Gophers and Huskies will face off at 11 a.m., with the second game to follow approximately 30 minutes later. Vanderbilt is making its 19th overall appearance in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, which is celebrating its 25th season this year. The Commodores hold a 30-18 record in tournament play. They have made 12 Sweet 16’s and four Elite 8’s in the school’s history, advancing all the way to the Final Four in 1993. Last season, the Commodores defeated Montana and Kansas State in Seattle to advance to the Sweet 16 of the Kansas City Regional. Eventual finalist Michigan State defeated the Commodores, 76-64, in the regional semifinal.
