VANDERBILT HOLDS ON FOR 7-6 WIN OVER OLE MISS OXFORD, Miss. — Vanderbilt survived a late Ole Miss rally to win in the team’s SEC opener, 7-6, in front of 4,129 fans Friday night at Swayze Field. The Commodores extended their win streak to six games and improved to 12-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They also snapped their six game losing to Ole Miss in Oxford dating back to the 2000 season. The Rebels dropped to 11-7 and 0-1 in SEC play. Vanderbilt had a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning before Jon-Jon Hancock had a RBI double to cut the VU lead to 7-4. The Rebels added two more runs in the ninth to make it 7-6 with two outs and the tying and go ahead runs at third and second base. Mark Wright then grounded out to short to end the game. David Price (2-2) allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings of work with 10 strikeouts and two walks. He recorded his third straight double-digit strikeout game and now has 35 in his last 22 innings pitched. “David did well to pitch seven innings against a good hitting team like Ole Miss,” said head coach Tim Corbin. “He kept them down and we made him throw a few more pitches than what we would like to because of our defense. We had some young kids playing for the first time against a good team on their home field and those things happen.” The Commodores jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. David Macias singled to open the game and moved to third on Pedro Alvarez’ double off of the rightfield wall. Parker Hanks walked to load the bases and Alex Feinberg would later hit a two-out two-run single to left to bring home Macias and Alvarez. Vanderbilt added a run in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Ryan Flaherty led off with a single and moved to third on a double to left by Shea Robin. Flaherty then scored on David Macias’ grounder to second base that was misplayed by the Rebels. Zack Cozart’s two-run double down the leftfield line cut the lead to 3-2 in the third. VU pushed the lead back to three in the fourth inning on Brian Hernandez’ two-out two run single to right. Chris Coghlan’s RBI single in the fifth cut the lead to 5-3 before the Commodores responded with two runs in the seventh to extend the lead to 7-3. Alex Feinberg and Matt Meingasner both had RBI singles in the inning. The Commodores recorded their sixth straight double-digit hit game with 12 on the night. Alex Feinberg led the team with three hits and three RBI, while Pedro Alvarez added two hits in the winning effort. “We were very opportunistic tonight offensively,” added Corbin. “We did a good job of battling in a few at bats and also had some key two-out hits that brought in runs.” The teams will play the second game of the three game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Senior righthander Matt Buschmann (2-1, 3.46 ERA) is slated to take the mound for the Commodores, while the Rebels will counter with freshman righty Cody Satterwhite (3-0, 3.05 ERA).
