NCAA Tournament Seedings Announced

Vanderbilt, Louisville, North Carolina, LSU Headline Nashville Pod of NCAA Women’s Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team received its seventh consecutive berth to the NCAA Tournament Monday, earning a No. 8 seed in the Cleveland region. The Commodores will face Louisville on Saturday, March 18, at Memorial Gymnasium.

The winner of that game will take on either No. 1 North Carolina or No. 16 UC-Riverside on Monday, March 20, for the right to play in the Sweet 16 the following weekend in Cleveland, Ohio.

That game would likely be against fourth-seeded Purdue or fifth-seeded UCLA, who will play in West Lafayette, Ind., this weekend.

The bottom half of the Cleveland region features second-seeded Tennessee, third-seeded Rutgers, sixth-seeded Texas A&M and seventh-seeded George Washington.

The other side of Nashville’s pod features teams battling for a spot in the San Antonio Regional. On Saturday, No. 1 LSU will face No. 16 Florida Atlantic, while No. 8 Minnesota will take on No. 9 Washington. A season ago, Vanderbilt travelled to Seattle, home of the ninth-seeded Huskies, for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

Vanderbilt is making its 19th overall appearance in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, which is celebrating its 25th season in this year. The Commodores hold a 30-18 record in tournament play. They have made 12 Sweet 16’s and four Elite 8’s in the school’s history, advancing all the way to the Final Four in 1993.

Louisville is making its 10th NCAA appearance. The Cardinals are 3-9 all-time in NCAA Tournament action, with their last win coming against Utah in 1998. Four of Louisville’s previous nine tournament losses have come at the hands of Southeastern Conference opponents Georgia and Auburn. The Commodores are 7-3 all-time against Louisville, but the two teams have never faced off in the postseason.

Last season, the Commodores defeated Montana and Kansas State in Seattle to advance to the Sweet 16 of the Kansas City Regional. Eventual finalist Michigan State defeated the Commodores, 76-64, in the regional semifinal.

The two remaining No. 1 seeds were Duke (Bridgeport) and Ohio State (Albuquerque).

Game times for all four Saturday contests, as well as the two Monday games, will be announced later this week. For ticket information, log on to http://vucommodores.com, visit the McGugin Ticket Office or call 615-322-GOLD.
