The Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team put an end to their three-game losing streak with an impressive 13-7 win over Cal-Berkeley.

The Commodores started the scoring when Ashley Paschall, after making a nice catch off of the pass from Margie Curran, put one into the back of the net in the 6th minute of play.

Vanderbilt would go onto score two more unanswered goals from Kate Hickman and Margie Curran, making the score 3-0 with 9:06 to go in the half.

Cal would get on the board less than two minutes later on a free position shot from Leanne Zilioli. But, that would be as close as the Golden Bears would get.

The Commodores would go on to score three of the next four goals in the half, all of which were scored by Jennifer Tapscott, who finished the game with five goals and an assist.

“There hasn’t been a day that I doubted (Tapscott) would break out like today,” said Head Coach Cathy Swezey on Jennifer Tapscott’s performance. “I hope to see a lot more of that,” added Swezey.

Taking a 6-2 lead into the second half, the Commodores continued their scoring barrage on a free position goal from Kendall Thrift with 26:09 remaining in the game. Less than three minutes later Kate Hickman  would score off of a feed from Margie Curran, making the score 8-2.

Less than a minute later, Cal would strike back on a goal by Danni Zuralow, making the score 8-3. But, the Commodores were just too much for Golden Bears.

“Our bench really came through and our starters did what they had to do,” said Coach Swezey after the victory.

Other offensive standouts for the Commodores included Kate Hickman (3 goals) and Margie Curran (2 goals, 1 assist). Other goals scorers for the Commodores were Kendall Thrift, Ashley Paschall and Heather Koutrakos.

Sasha Cielak picked up 4 groundballs and three draw controls for the Dores, while Michele Slotke also added four groundballs.

Goalkeeper Brooke Shinaberry was also impressive in the net making 6 saves for Vanderbilt.

The next game for the Commodores will be against Yale on Saturday, March 11 at noon CT at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.
