Women’s Golf to LSU 3/2/2006
BATON ROUGE — Vanderbilt opens play Friday at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic, an event in which Commodore Chris Brady is the defending individual champion. “This is a tournament that could serve as a springboard for us this spring,” says Coach Martha Richards Freitag. “Our goal every single tournament is to win the team championship but right now I think it is more important for us to play good golf than where we might actually finish.” LSU’s University Club has been kind to the Commodores. In addition to Brady’s title a year ago, in which she registered rounds of 72-68-71 for a five-under par 211, it is the same place where Vanderbilt won the 2004 SEC Championship. Vanderbilt is rated 13th in the latest Golfweek rankings. Auburn and Virginia are two other highly rated teams in the field although host LSU is always dangerous on its home turf. A host of other strong SEC, ACC and southeastern powers could also contend. In addition to Brady, Kristen Svicarovich, Jacqui Concolino, Liebelei Lawrence and Amber Lundskog comprise the VU lineup. Concolino is fresh from her win in Tucson, a victory that garnered her SEC and National Player of the Week honors. Vanderbilt will be paired with Auburn and Alabama in the first round. Golfstat.com will carry live scoring. There will be 18 holes of play Friday through Sunday. |
