Women’s Hoops Roll Into SEC Tourney

3/1/2006

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team faces 11th-seeded Alabama in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament, Thursday at the ALLTEL Arena in Little Rock, Ark. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:50 p.m. CT and the game will be broacast by FSN South.

Vanderbilt earned the tournament’s sixth seed by defeating South Carolina, 88-71, on Sunday in Nashville. The Commodores (19-9, 8-6 SEC) had put themselves in position to be seeded as high as fourth, but victories by Kentucky and Florida bumped them down to their eventual position.

Alabama had 11th place in the league wrapped up coming into the final weekend, but still had some control over their first round opponent in the SEC Tournament. A victory by the Tide over Kentucky would have moved Vanderbilt up to fifth and slated the Tide for a rematch with the Wildcats.

On Feb. 2 of this year, the Commodores earned a 65-53 victory at Alabama. Vanderbilt has won six of the last seven games against the Crimson Tide.

Third-seeded Georgia awaits the winner of Thursday’s game. Along with LSU, Tennessee and Kentucky, the Lady Bulldogs earned a bye from Thursday’s action. Georgia’s quarterfinal game will tip at 8:50 p.m. on Friday, March 3.

Vanderbilt’s balanced offensive attack is primed for the conference tournament. The Commodores bring an all-conference backcourt of Dee Davis (first-team) and Caroline Williams (second-team) to Little Rock, complemented by the league’s two leaders in field goal percentage, posts Liz Sherwood and Nicole Jules.
