Liz Sherwood Named 6th Woman by SEC 2/28/2006
Three Commodores Honored By Southeastern Conference A trio of Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball players earned postseason awards from Southeastern Conference coaches, as announced Tuesday by league officials. Juniors Dee Davis and Caroline Williams were named to the All-SEC team, while sophomore Liz Sherwood earned “Sixth Woman of the Year” honors. Davis was named First-Team All-SEC after leading the conference with 6.9 assists per game, good for third nationally. The Cincinnati native also averaged 8.0 points and 2.2 steals per contest this season. Williams earned Second-Team All-SEC honors for her impressive performance this year. The Rockmart, Ga., product averaged 12.7 points per game while leading the SEC in three-pointers made per game. Williams also ranked third in the conference in minutes played. Sherwood was lauded with the league’s first “SEC Sixth Woman of the Year” award. The Castle Rock, Colo., native came off the bench in VU’s final nine SEC games to average 11 points per game while connecting on 81 percent of her free throws. Sherwood led the nation in field goal percentage this year, hitting 66.4 percent of her 238 shot attempts. Kentucky’s Mickie DeMoss earned Coach of the Year honors for leading her team to a fourth-place league finish. LSU’s Seimone Augustus earned Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive year, while Tennessee’s Candace Parker was named Freshman of the Year. The three Commodore standouts lead their squad into the 2006 Southeastern Conference Women’s Tournament at the ALLTEL Arena in Little Rock, Ark., this week. Vanderbilt opens play against 11th-seeded Alabama on Thursday, March 2, at 8:50 p.m. CT.
