Men’s Hoops vs. UT Game Time has Changed!

Jefferson-Pilot Television has moved the starting time of Saturday’s men’s basketball game with Tennessee to 1:00 (CST).

This has all the makings of a great game:  a victory could keep our post-season NCAA Tournament hopes alive, the game is sold-out, Tennessee comes in as SEC East champion and Commodore seniors Julian Terrell and Mario Moore make their final appearance at Memorial Gymnasium.  Senior Day activities will begin prior to the tip at 12:45.

SEC Men’s Tournament Tickets

A limited number of tickets for the Men’s Southeastern Conference Tournament remain on sale at the ticket office at $300 a book.  Call 615-322-3544 for information.

Women’s Team Finishing Strong Again

Coach Melanie Balcomb always seems to have her basketball team peaking at the end of the season, just in time for tournaments.  This year the ‘Dores won six of their last eight games to finish 19-9 overall and 8-6 in league play. In her prior three years, she has guided Vanderbilt to 22, 26 and 24 win seasons. This week we carry a six seed into the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Little Rock, Ark. The Commodores will open against 11th-seeded Alabama. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:50 p.m. CT and the game will be televised by FSN South.

Saturday Baseball Moved

Saturday’s baseball game with Ball State has been moved to 3:30 to avoid conflict with the basketball game.

Feel a Draft?

Is anyone out there burned out on the endless NFL draft besides me? I’m a big Jay Cutler fan but if I have to listen or read one more item — national or local — about who thinks what of the top three quarterbacks I might blow a gasket. The draft is still weeks — or is it months? — away and we have had a steady diet of draft theory for months already. Even the writers spewing out this chatter privately shake their heads about the overkill and wonder how they will come up with yet another flimsy angle to investigate.

Seriously, what is it about college recruiting or the NFL draft that so captivates so many? It occurs to me that for them, fantasizing about the process of recruiting or the draft is more important than the actual team or game outcome itself.  Guys are making cushy livings feeding a hungry sports world juicy tidbits about whether Bubba is going to sign with Florida State or Thomas is 10-pounds too light to go in the third round.

If you enjoy this endless hyperbole, knock yourself out. You will have unlimited theories to mull over  in the weeks ahead. Just wake me when it’s over. I’ll be the guy watching the actual games!
