The intensity of the match was amplified by Geatz’ explosive temper, which cost the Golden Gopher two points. “It’s never fun when you have to play a match like that,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. “But we are going to have to learn to handle, not only that, but all kinds of situations.” The Gophers were also penalized at No. 3 singles, when Nic Edlefsen was overruled three times in one set. Edlefsen was penalized one point. The drama continued during the tie breaker. “It was one of the strangest tie breakers I have ever played,” Andy Mack said. “He had the match point every time until I won 10-12. I’ve never played anything like it. I just stayed calm and didn’t think about winning or The match came down to two tie breakers in No. 2 and No. 4 singles. The Commodores dropped both matches 6-1 in the final set. “We played badly in doubles. Singles was a lot better, but it’s hard to dig yourself out of a hole to come back,” said. “We had some great plays, but we have an ability to play that way consistently. We are going to have to work on playing with more discipline.” The Commodores will begin SEC season the road next week against Alabama on Friday. Results |
