Commodores Down Owls 7-0

2/25/2006

The No. 14 Commodores defeated the Rice Owls 7-0 in their last match before SEC season.

Amanda Fish and Taka Bertrand aggressively kicked off the doubles round, holding Rice’s Kimberly Patenuade and Madeja Egic to the three games before letting the Owl duo get on the board. The Commodore team didn’t let up throughout the contest and took the win 8-2. The Commodores followed with wins at No. 1 (8-3) and No. 3 (8-5) to put VU up 1-0.

Sophomore Amanda Taylor improved her overall record to 8-1 when she quickly defeated Alanna Rodgers at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-0). Bertrand (8-0) followed in the same fashion with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 against Rice’s Christine Dao.

Amanda Taylor has really been playing super tennis in doubles and in singles,” VU Head Coach Geoff Macdonald said. “She’s done such a great job leading and it’s been really fun watching her talent emerge.”

Freshman Maggie Yahner stepped back into singles play after sitting out since the ITA tournament. Yahner never let Rice opponent Madeja Egic come closer than three games, and took the win (6-3, 6-2).

Liberty Sveke wrapped the match up for the Commodores, defeating Kimberly Patenaude 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

“I was really please with the way everyone hung together. Everyone competed really well. Once we got warmed up we were ready to go,” Macdonald said.

The Commodores will begin SEC this Friday when they host Alabama at 2:30.
