Women’s Tennis Hosts Rice Saturday 2/23/2006 The Commodore tennis team will host the Rice University Owls this Saturday at the Currey Tennis Center. The Owls (3-5) have faced three SEC schools so far in 2006, LSU (L3-4), Kentucky (L5-2), and Mississippi State (W4-2). In their recent loss to Kentucky, the Owls’ two singles wins came from No. 5 Medeja Egic (7-5, 6-0) and No. 6 Kimberly Patenaude (6-3, 6-3). The Owls will play Georgia Tech on Thursday night in Atlanta before traveling to Nashville to face the Commodores on Saturday. The Commodores (7-1) are undefeated at the Currey Tennis Center and are entering the contest on five match winning streak. Vanderbilt’s Taka Bertrand (7-0) received the SEC’s Player of the Week Award for her singles win against Baylor’s No. 9 Zuzana Cerna that clinched the 4-3 upset last Sunday. The win helped Bertrand soar ahead in the ITA rankings from No. 47 to No. 19. The Commodores’ No. 1 singles player, Amanda Fish (6-2), also jumped in the rankings, making her 2006 debut at No. 40.
