Women’s Hoops Win Big Over Kentucky 2/23/2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Five members of the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team posted double figures on the way to a 72-55 victory over Southeastern Conference rival Kentucky Thursday at Memorial Gymnasium. The VU victory ended a four-game winning streak for the Wildcats and was Vanderbilt’s 10th straight win in the series. Junior Carla Thomas led the Commodores with 17 points and seven rebounds. Point guard Dee Davis scored 14 while dishing out a game-high seven assists. Senior Nicole Jules added 13 points for Vanderbilt, while junior Caroline Williams (11) and sophomore Liz Sherwood (10) were also in double figures for the Commodores. Kentucky freshman point guard Carly Ormerod led all scorers with 19 points, but also had eight of the Wildcats’ 27 turnovers. Vanderbilt last forced 27 turnovers, a season-high, in an 80-29 victory over Alabama A&M in November. Freshman guard Jenn Risper led the Dores with a career-high four steals. The game marked the first time since early November that five Commodores had reached double-figures. Vanderbilt has not lost to Kentucky in Nashville since the 1986 season. Kentucky (19-7, 8-5) plays host to Alabama this weekend to close the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 26. Vanderbilt welcomes South Carolina to Memorial Gym for a 2 p.m. CT tip-off that same day. Following the game, the Commodores will honor seniors Erica Grimaldi and Jules. |
