Women’s Hoops Welcomes Kentucky 2/22/2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team begins the final week of the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 23, when Kentucky visits Memorial Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. CT tip. The Commodores enter the game looking for their 10th consecutive win in the series, and their 11th straight win at home over the Wildcats. Vanderbilt has not lost to Kentucky in Nashville since 1986. The final week of the season is crucial for the Commodores, who sit at .500 in the conference (6-6) and at 17-9 need three more wins to reach the 20-win plateau. The Dores would also like to keep Kentucky from claiming its 20th win of the year. The Wildcats (19-6, 8-4 SEC) ride a four-game Southeastern Conference winning streak into Nashville, having most recently defeated Mississippi State in Starkville. Sophomore Liz Sherwood continues to make her case as the SEC’s “Sixth Woman of the Year”. Coming off the bench against Georgia, Sherwood led the Commodores in points (16) and rebounds (seven) for the third time in five games. She leads the Commodores in scoring, averaging 13.2 points per game, while leading the nation in field goal percentage (67.7 percent). Vanderbilt plays host to South Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be followed by a Senior Day presentation which will honor VU’s Erica Grimaldi and Nicole Jules. |
