It was a frigid 27 degrees outside, but the Commodores were heating things up inside the Currey Tennis Center when they notched a 4-3 upset over the No. 10 Baylor Bears.

“We had a great win over the Big 12 champions,” VU Head Coach Geoff Macdonald said.

The match featured singles upsets from Taka Bertrand and Amanda Taylor.

Taka Bertrand (7-0) clinched the match with her straight set win (7-6, 6-2) against ninth ranked Zuzana Cerna at the No. 2 seed. The win put the ‘Dores up 4-0.

“Taka did a fantastic job. She’s one of the toughest competitors I’ve coached,” Macdonald said.

Sophomore Caroline Ferrell notched the first singles point of the night for the Commodores, defeating Iva Mihaylova (6-3, 6-0). Amanda Taylor followed with a win against No. 80 Daniel Covello in a straight set victory to put the
Commodores up 3-0.

2005 NCAA Singles Champion Klara Zrustova defeated Amanda Fish (6-4, 7-6) at the No. 1 slot. Freshmen Courtney Ulery and Liberty Sveke also fell to Bears opponents.

The doubles point gave the Commodores the winning edge in Sunday’s match, thanks to wins by No. 1 seed team Maggie Yahner and No.3 seed pair Ulery and Sveke.

“The freshmen at No. 3 doubles had a tremendous win. They played really well and it was a huge match for them,” Macdonald said.

With the upset, the Commodores improved their overall record to 7-1. The Commodores will host Rice University at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday at the Currey Tennis Center.
