VU Cages Butler Bulldogs, 6-1

2/19/2006

The men’s tennis team followed up the women’s upset over Baylor with another unday victory when they defeated the Butler Bulldogs (6-1).

The ‘Dores started out the afternoon winning the doubles point (2-1) over the Bulldogs. No. 3 team of Nathan Sachs and Nik Cromydas was the first team to Harness the Dogs, 8-4, followed by No. 2 seed Evan Dufaux and Andy Mack, 8-5.

“Nathan and Nik playing doubles really took the pressure off us by winning easily and quickly,” VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage explained.

In singles play, No. 1 seed Ryan Preston put the Commodores up 2-0 with his 6-2, 6-4 win over Butler’s James Low. No. 4 seed Andy Mack secured the next win (6-4, 6-4), followed by Sachs (7-6, 6-2) who sealed the win for the ‘Dores.

Dufaux played a tie-breaker against Butler’s Brandon Gill, who recently received the Horizon League’s Player of the Week Award. Dufaux took the win with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory.

“It was a really close match even though the score was 6-1,” Duvenhage said. “We’ve been playing consistently in singles, but I felt like today we played a tired match. We’re going to have to play better than we played today
for upcoming matches.”

The Commodores’ next contest will be on Saturday, February 25 against Minnesota at the Currey Tennis Center following the women’s contest against Rice University.
