Lacrosse Loses Tough One to Virginia 2/19/2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team put together a tremendous effort, but was unable to overcome the No. 5 Cavaliers. Despite four Kate Hickman goals, the Dores fell to Virginia, 10-9, Sunday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex. The Cavaliers controlled the game early in the first half, scoring the first four goals of the contest. But, the Commodores would go on a 5-2 run to finish off the half making the score 6-5. Virginia opened the scoring in the second half, making the score 7-5. But, Vanderbilt answered back with a goal by Hickman, making the score 7-6. The Commodores would eventually tie the score at 9-9 on another goal by Hickman with 10:18 remaining. But, Nikki Lieb of Virginia would go on to score the winning goal for the Cavaliers with 7:45 remaining. The Commodores had a few opportunities to tie it up in the end, but were unable to finish, and fell for the eighth straight time to the Cavaliers. “The team gave 100 percent and showed a lot of heart, effort and intensity, but we were unable to make the adjustments when we had to,” Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. Credit should also be given to goalkeeper Brooke Shinaberry who had nine saves on the day. Other goal scorers for the Commodores included Cara Giordano (2), Jennifer Tapscott (2) and Margie Curran. The Dores will be looking to rebound when they take on Penn State at home next Saturday, Feb 25 at 1 p.m. CT. |
