2/18/2006 BALTIMORE-Vanderbilt’s bowling team had an upbeat Saturday in the opening day of the Morgan State Invitational. The Commodores stand in second place in the 18-team field, just 138 pins behind top-ranked Nebraska. “The best part of the day is we went 2-2 against teams rated in top 5 nationally,” says Coach John Williamson. “We really finished the day strong. To be within striking distance of Nebraska after Day One is encouraging as they have been used to walking away from the field.” Commodore freshman Michelle Peloquin had another outstanding day, averaging 212 with a high game of 247. Individual standings were not posted but it is believed her pinnage would be near the top of the large field. “The lane conditions were extremely difficult.,” Williamson said. “You have Nebraska averaging 970 — the shot is just not scoring. I was pleased with how we adjusted and finished strong. We’re in a contending position we haven’t been in before. 138 pins isn’t a lot to make up but we play 15 Baker Games tomorrow so it is to be expected the field will have some movement.” Karen Grygiel, whose status was uncertain with a cut on a finger of her bowling hand, was able to bowl all five games. Vanderbilt’s closing 1,075 score was just off its season best 1,092.
