2/14/2006

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Commodores (6-1) defeated local rival Middle Tennessee 6-1 on Tuesday night.

The No. 14 Commodores took the doubles point in a three proset sweep with Amanda Taylor and Maggie Yahner at the No. 1 seed. Both Yahner/Taylor and No. 2 seeds Taka Bertrand/Amanda Fish improved their season doubles records to 5-2. Liberty Sveke and Courtney Ulery defeated MT’s Pooja / Ann-Kristin Siljestrom team 8-4 to improve their doubles record to 3-1.

All Commodores held their opponents to two-set matches in singles play. Commodores Fish, Bertrand, Ferrell, and Taylor each held their MT opponent to one game during their singles matches.

Caroline Ferrell was the first to finish singles play, defeating Blue Raider Kelly Adams 6-0, 6-1.

“It felt really good to get back out after ten days off,” Ferrell said. “We had a pretty good atmosphere for a Tuesday match and it felt nice to get out with a win.”

With her 6-3, 6-3 win over MT’s Siljestrom, Ulery improved her undefeated record to 7-0.

“Courtney is really getting better by the match,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald said. “She’s really coming along and she’s adjusted to college tennis beautifully.”

Liberty Sveke had to suspend play at the No. 6 seed due to a minor injury. She is expected to fully recover for Sunday’s match. Because of the forfeit, MT’s Kommireddi earned the Blue Raider’s only match point of the night.

The Commodores will play a doubleheader with the VU men’s squad on Sunday, February 19 at the Currey Tennis Center. The women will face No. 10 Baylor University at 10 a.m., immediately followed by the men against Butler
University .
