Men’s Hoops Goes Retro 2/14/2006 Vanderbilt to Wear Throwback Jerseys Saluting the SEC’s Basketball Tradition The Southeastern Conference spotlights its celebration of eight decades of college basketball beginning this weekend with “SEC Throwback Week” (Feb. 18-26). Each member school has designated a previous year’s uniform as its throwback uniform to use in association with the program. Vanderbilt will take the court Saturday at Georgia wearing replica jerseys from the second half of the 1960s. The Commodores also will wear the uniform at home against LSU (Feb. 22) and on the road at South Carolina (Feb. 25). Vanderbilt men’s basketball in the 1960s was highlighted by the performances of two Commodore All-Americans in Clyde Lee (1966) and Tom Hagan (1969) as well as the league’s first African-American scholarship player in Perry Wallace. Roy Skinner, the Vanderbilt head coach of the era, twice was honored as the SEC’s Coach of the Year during the time span in 1965 and 1967. The Commodores won their first SEC regular season title in 1965. The specially designed uniforms also will be worn for all games of the SEC Tournament, March 9-12, at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville. The “throwback” theme has been incorporated into many aspects of the SEC Tournament, including the official tournament logo and court design. |
