GETTYSBURG, Pa. – In its 2006 season opener, the Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team put together an impressive performance to defeat Mount St. Mary’s, 14-5, Tuesday at Gettysburg College.

The Commodores’ two leading scorers from last season led the way again today as sophomore Margie Curran scored four goals and senior Kate Hickman tallied three of her own. Jennifer Tapscott would also add a hat-trick in the victory.

The host Mountaineers opened the scoring in the 2nd minute of play, but that would be the last time the Commodores would trail. After Mount’s initial goal, Vanderbilt scored seven unanswered goals and took an 8-2 lead into the half.

The Commodores opened the second half just as they finished the first, scoring four more goals before the Mountaineers answered back. The Mountaineers would cut the lead to 12-5 with 5:23 left in the game, but would never get any closer.

The game was won on both sides of the ball. Not only did the Dores outshoot the Mountainers 37-16, but their defense forced 25 turnovers.

“It was good to be able to finally get our feet wet and to start our season with a solid win,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Coach Swezey said.

Other goal scorers for the Commodores were Kendell Thrift (2), Ashley Paschall and Cara Giordano.

Vanderbilt plays host to its home opener on Sun., Feb. 19, when Virginia visits the VU Lacrosse Complex for a 1 p.m. CT start.
